Metrics and Analytics: LJ3
After reading chapter 6 of Social Media Communication by
Jeremy Harris I was not surprised about how social media store our data. Social
media is not only use as entertainment, but it used as a business venture.
Social media apps such as Facebook and Instagram watch not only what we post
but how many likes we have and the comments we receive. They view this data regarding
personal gain of business to earn more money. For instance, A high end company
may post clothing or electronics they are considering putting out to see how
the world will react to it before they spend unnecessary time and money on
something that will not sell how the company wants it to. “Social networking
generates measures of branding, influence, trust, and dispersion of ideas.” (p.173).
This allows social influencers to gain their fans by branding and providing
viewers with trust that the product they are influencing other to purchase is true.
Regarding
the data and analytics of social media many platforms use the personal information
of others to form marketing on the individual’s page. Most networks ask for
permission to gain the access of an individual’s personal information, but this
does not stop threats such as data breaches. Chapter 6 aligns with “We Are Data” because it
talks about how what you do on social media is never private. These readings
should teach those that are not aware of the threats that can be caused by not
using internet security appropriately. Personally, I knew that whatever we
allow on our social media will never fully go away and that we are leaving a
data trail. This is why when you log onto Facebook, they provide ads that you
were just discussing and searching. My takeaway on these readings is to continue
to monitor what I allow online and be mindful of the data that I share.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI think it's obvious to see that social media stores our data. Companies send out "test post" to see how we respond to them and if we interact in a way they like then they use that data to then reach out to use or format our social media to better fit their agenda.(Lipschultz, p. 163) You have to realize that at this point, any information you put on the Internet is bought and sold and nothing is private because once it's out there, it is out there forever so be careful what you post. You could delete an account and there's an option saying delete your data but if you think about it, it's only deleted on your end which is very hard to trust.
Hello Arianna,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your journal and was very interested in how you analyzed the usage of social media. The main focus of social media for me was the idea of communication and using social media as a way to talk to friends and family, but I like how you incorporated the idea of using it as a business venture. I agree that many big company's look for people that are highly qualified and being able to use social media well is a huge bonus.
