Social Media Future: LJ4

After reading chapter 7 of Social Media Communication by Jeremy Lipschitz I learned a lot of interesting material. “Mobile technologies create flexibility to briefly bring people together physically and virtually. (pg 194). Mobile technology has created many opportunities for people such as giving them more time to do things at home or on the go, for example on a vacation. Many people can make money from their phones which means they can enjoy time with family and friends but still be able to handle responsibilities on their phones. Since more companies are creating apps for users to download, we are now able to do a variety of things such as pay our bills instead of being face to face with a representative. Mobile technology has also increased the social media impact on politics. Obama created an innovative campaign app in 2008 that allowed young voters to access their contacts that focused on the key states and urged them to vote. “The app was a mobile portal for campaign information, upcoming events, Obama videos, and positions on key issues” (pg 194). The app helped raise voters for the political campaign. Mobile devices offer access to current information and entertainment. Although it seems like mobile technologies make day to day life a little easier there are many disadvantages such as increased levels of cyberbullying of people in their communities and celebrities. When you like a cause or group you are revealing some of your identity that can sometimes hurt a person’s reputation depending on the situation. Technologies have also allowed us to create memes that are basically a snippet of someone and putting a funny or harassing quote with it. Another disadvantage is that our privacy is not always protected when you go against an app’s terms of agreement.

I was intrigued with the information I learned about meta and the metaverse. Although I am not sure how I feel about the information that I learned knowing that I will be using it one day. I understand the reason for changing Facebook to the name Meta because I do agree with the statement “We are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future. “You cannot thoroughly commit until you have changed some things. I think this will change social media because to some it is already very addicting. Now that the metaverse will have things such as “Horizon worlds” it is potential that it will be addicting because you can live a life that you are not necessarily living such as the sims game. Basically, living a false life that people already portray themselves like on social media now. I think social media will continue to grow as well as grow many businesses. I am interested to see how things will go in the future.

  1. Hey Arianna!
I completely agree with your thoughts on the Metaverse. I'm still in that gray area where I'm interested in knowing more about it (since I've never seen something like this before) but also worried about the effect it could have on our reality. Great post!

  2. Hi Arianna,
After reading this week's material I also felt really interested in the metaverse and the plans that they have for digital technology. I think that whatever their plans maybe, we are going to see a serious change in social media and how we use it. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Arianna,
You are correct; person-to-person contact for tasks like paying bills have definitely become rare. People see it as a positive that they don't have to interact with others, which I can understand sometimes, but I do feel like personal interaction is something that we shouldn't necessarily view so negatively.
